Does a Person Need to Be Physically Present for a Brand Experience to Resonate?

The article linked above discusses “experiences” with brands and whether or not a physical presence is required for a message to resonate well. My initial thought is no. I have identified and participated with many brands virtually (mostly through social media) and think that in this day in age, there might not be as much of a difference as there was a few years ago. What are your thoughts?
